Geary County Historical Society

Specific Need

GCHS hopes to raise money for a number of purposes -- to improve our Research Center, enhance our education program, and build even better exhibits -- but there's one special project we hope to finish this year: replacing the windows in St. Joseph's Historic Church. Located on McDowell Creek Road a mile south of I-70 exit 307, St. Joseph's parish dates from the 1860s. The native limestone church was built in 1910 and decommissioned in the 1980s, when the original windows were donated to other churches. We have replaced about half the windows in the church and just need $20,000 more to complete the work and bring natural light to the whole church once again.

The mission of the Geary County Historical Society, Inc. (GCHS) is:

  • To preserve and collect the history of Geary County, Kansas
  • To disseminate historical information using all appropriate media
  • To provide community education on local history and culture
  • To preserve historic landmarks
  • To recognize exceptional historic preservation
  • To promote public participation in preservation and commemoration of regional, state and national history
  • To operate museums/ historic sites that preserve objects of value to the Geary County story

Geary County Historical Society's home is the three-story limestone building at 6th & Adams that once served the community as Junction City High School. Now a museum, the building houses three floors of exhibits all about our community's history. Our latest exhibit is titled G is for Goat Gland: An Alphabetical History of Geary County.
