Profile

Additional Information

For more than a century, Scouting programs have helped young people develop the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. These values remain as relevant today as they were when Scouting began in 1910. Through Scouting, young people strengthen their academic abilities, self-confidence, ethical decision-making, leadership, and citizenship—skills that continue to influence their lives into adulthood.

Many activities and youth organizations teach practical skills and teamwork. Scouting goes further by encouraging young people to develop a lasting appreciation for serving others and improving their communities.

Scouting helps each young person understand that they are important as an individual. Members of the Scouting family care about their growth, well-being, and achievements - not simply whether a competition is won or lost.

Most importantly, Scouting promotes personal responsibility, sound decision-making, and healthy self-esteem. These qualities help young people resist negative peer pressure, face difficult situations with confidence, and make the right choices.

Since 1910, Scouting has helped prepare generations of American leaders by combining educational experiences and lifelong values with fun and adventure. Through more than a century of experience, Scouting America understands that investing in young people helps build a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

Meeting the Needs of Young People

Through programs for young men and women, Scouting America helps meet six essential needs of young people:

  • Mentoring
  • Lifelong learning
  • Faith traditions
  • Serving others
  • Healthy living
  • Building character

Serving North-Central and Northwest Kansas

The Coronado Area Council continues its proud heritage of serving community organizations throughout the 32 counties in its North-Central and Northwest Kansas service area. More than 1,500 young people participate in Scouting and Exploring programs made possible by nearly 1,000 dedicated volunteer leaders.

In 2025, the Coronado Area Council served more than 500 young people in the Konza District, which includes Junction City and Fort Riley. Scouting America and the Coronado Area Council gave Kansas youth opportunities to try new things, serve others, build self-confidence, develop leadership skills, and reinforce strong ethical standards.

Why Community Support Is Needed

Annual youth membership is $85 per calendar year. This fee helps cover basic administrative expenses, but the actual cost of providing a high-quality Scouting experience for each young person is significantly greater than the registration fee collected.

To meet this need, the Coronado Area Council conducts its annual Investment in Character and Leadership campaign and seeks support through grants, individual and corporate gifts, fundraising activities, special events, and community partnerships such as the Geary County Community Fund Match Day.

These contributions help cover the costs of maintaining camp properties, insurance, program administration, professional and support staff, volunteer resources, training, activities, events, and other services necessary to provide safe and meaningful Scouting experiences.
