Geary County Food Pantry

Goal: $20,000.00

Specific Need

Local food insecurity  Too many Geary County families face hunger.  Our county has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Kansas, at 13.3%.  It ranks third in the state for child food insecurity, at 23.6%.  The number of individuals served has risen dramatically in recent months as collaborative efforts have expanded and economic needs have risen.  Individual numbers served rose from 781 in June of 2022 to 1,548 in June of 2023, and children served rose from 340 in June of 2022 to 481 in June of 2023!

The future: Better facility, better service  We have outgrown our current facility and desperately need increased and improved space.  After an exhaustive two-year search for available real estate, the Geary County Food Pantry has purchased land at the corner of 7th Street and Clay Street to build a new facility that will enable us to help more people and better serve those in need.  With a better facility, more fresh foods could be offered to promote healthier diets and neighbors can be served in a manner that supports individual choice and dignity.

The Geary County Food Pantry plans to use funds raised through the 2023 Geary County Match Day to support our facility and infrastructure needs.

Mission

The Geary County Food Pantry is committed to providing those in need with access to healthy foods by working together with a wide range of community partners.  Our priority is developing a service model which respects the dignity and autonomy of our clients and supports individual choice.

The Geary County Food Pantry facilitates access to a wide range of resources for neighbors and focuses on informing and educating our community regarding food insecurity in Geary County.
