Stormont Vail Foundation Geary Fund

Goal: $8,500.00

Specific Need

A jaundice meter is the most effective and efficient way to test babies for bilirubin.  Effective screening can decrease readmission rates and durations of stay. Having dependable results in seconds rather than hours helps to increase patient safety and expedite decision making. The meter is also easy to use and less stressful than taking a TcB measurement (heel stick) for all involved (baby, parents and the health care staff).  Use of this meter is a best practice.  The Flint Hills Campus’ Birthplace does not currently have a jaundice meter and relies on the TcB measurement.  The Foundation has thus far raised $1,500 towards this purchase.

For babies diagnosed with jaundice, donations will also fund the purchase of a hospital-grade, lightweight and portable phototherapy biliblanket. The blanket makes it easier for moms to breastfeed, reduces time in the hospital and parents can still hold , feed, play with the baby. The blanket has the strength of light from sun, but is safer because filters out harmul UV rays. The Foundation has already raised $500 towards this purchase.

Both items will be used at Stormont Vail's Flint Hills Campus for babies born in Geary County.
